Mid Century Modern Art Prints in Interiors

Mid Century Modern Art Prints in Interiors

Mid Century Modern art prints have long held a significant place in interior design, celebrated for their timeless appeal and ability to transform spaces with their bold, clean lines and vibrant colors. Emerging in the mid-20th century, this design movement introduced a fresh approach to art and decor that continues to captivate design enthusiasts today. These prints not only offer visual appeal but also pair well with vases and pottery. As we explore this topic, we'll explore the influence of notable artists, how these art prints can be seamlessly integrated into home decor.

To fully appreciate the impact of Mid Century Modern art prints, it's essential to understand their origins and evolution. The Introduction To the Design of Mid-Century Modernism provides valuable insights into how this style emerged as a response to the post-war era's need for simplicity and functionality. The movement's emphasis on organic forms, minimal ornamentation, and integration with nature laid the groundwork for what would become a defining aesthetic of the 20th century.

The Influence of Mid Century Modern Artists

The Mid Century Modern art movement was shaped by a group of visionary artists whose work continues to influence contemporary design. These artists brought innovation and a unique perspective to the art world, translating their ideas into pieces that are now iconic.

  • Jackson Pollock: Known for his abstract expressionist style, Pollock's work is characterized by dynamic, chaotic splashes of color that convey emotion and movement.
  • Mark Rothko: Rothko's color field paintings, with their large, soft-edged blocks of color, create a sense of depth and contemplation.
  • Alexander Calder: Calder's kinetic sculptures and mobiles introduced movement into art, blending form and function in a playful yet sophisticated manner.

These artists, among others, have left a lasting impact on the Mid Century Modern art scene. Their works are often reflected in art prints that capture the essence of their styles, making them accessible to a broader audience. Incorporating Mid Century Modern art prints and paintings into your home can be a fun experience, allowing you to blend history with contemporary aesthetics. Here are some practical tips to help you create a unified look:

  • Choose the Right Space: Identify areas in your home that would benefit from a visual focal point. Living rooms, dining areas, and even hallways can be enhanced with the right art prints and paintings.
  • Match with Your Decor: Ensure that the colors and themes of your art pieces complement your existing furniture and decor. This creates a unified look that ties the room together.
  • Mix and Match: Don't hesitate to combine different art forms. Pair art prints with paintings to add depth and interest to your walls.
  • Consider Scale and Proportion: The size of your art should match the space. Large walls can handle oversized prints, while smaller areas benefit from more modest pieces.
  • Balance with Furniture: Ensure that your art complements your existing furniture. Mid Century Modern pieces often feature clean lines and neutral tones, making them versatile for various settings.
  • Consider Color Schemes: Use the colors in your art prints to guide your room's palette. This can help create a harmonious and unified look.

Paul Evans: Brutalist Furniture Icon

Paul Evans: Brutalist Furniture Icon

This past summer we had the opportunity to be included in In Collects article about the polarizing American-born designer, Paul Evans, and his contribution to the history of American furniture design and thriving contemporary market, celebrating mid century modern designers.

Paul Evans was constantly innovating, and as a leader of the Craft movement, no two pieces are the same. Each piece communicates his exuberance, passion, and fearlessness in manipulating materials in new ways. He was prolific, creating a new design almost every 6 months, which is why collectors are drawn to Evan’s work and his unique approach to mid century modern style.

Paul Evans Signed Stalagmite Bronze Mid Century Modern Coffee Table :  A stunning brutalist Paul Evans PE-128 coffee table which was part of the "Sculptured Metal Collection" for Directional. This dramatic cocktail table is comprised of a dark patinated bronze which has been artistically sculpted over a steel base in a stalagmite formation, presenting an arresting composition. This piece of Paul Evans brutalist furniture features bronze peaks and troughs supporting a circular glass top. The Stalagmite cocktail table includes the incised signature and date "PE79" by the artist, which can be seen in the photo gallery and denotes the production year of 1979.

Evans & The American Craft Movement:

The American Craft movement celebrates creation, and Paul Evans’s radical works further pushed the boundaries. The Craft movement rejected mass-produced design, and Evans’s innovative use of metal meant that no two pieces were the same, making him one of the leaders of this period. He smashes the boundaries that define art, sculpture, and furniture, eliciting debates between collectors, admirers, and peers as to whether his pieces were “good” or “bad, ugly or beautiful.” Conversation always elicits an appreciation for his work and why we at Hobbs Modern always look for his pieces. We love designs that bring about conversation and Paul Evans' work is functional art. His contributions have become an essential part of mid century modern decor. We love designs that can be both, and Paul Evans’s work epitomizes that juxtaposition.
