A beautifully sculptural example of Mexican Mid-Century Modern design, this rare fish-shaped ashtray was created by renowned Mexican designer Pepe Mendoza. Celebrated for his imaginative use of brass, copper, and semi-precious stones, Mendoza’s work blends modernist forms with traditional Mexican craftsmanship, making his decorative objects highly sought after by collectors today.
Cast in solid brass, the ashtray features a stylized fish silhouette inlaid with richly figured natural malachite. The body is decorated with a geometric crossed-scale pattern that showcases the vibrant green stone, whose dramatic natural veining creates subtle variations of emerald, turquoise, and deep forest tones. The sculptural form and bold materials embody the artistic spirit of Mexican Modernism during the 1950s and 1960s.
The underside retains its original Pepe Mendoza maker’s stamp, “Mendoza – Hecho en Mexico,” confirming its authenticity. Whether displayed on a coffee table, bar, desk, or bookshelf, it serves equally well as a functional ashtray, catchall, or sculptural decorative object.
This example remains in original vintage condition, exhibiting an attractive aged patina throughout the brass. Oxidation, surface scratches, minor nicks, and areas of staining and discoloration are present, all consistent with age and decades of use. These characteristics enhance its authenticity and vintage appeal.
