An icon of Brazilian modernism, the MP-41 sofa by Percival Lafer is celebrated for its bold architectural frame, ingenious construction, and extraordinary comfort.
This example has undergone a careful, historically accurate restoration. New support straps have been fabricated now, ensuring proper tension, longevity, and the deep, relaxed sit that made Laferโs designs famous. The sofa will be upholstered in brand-new black leather, selected to be true to the original specificationโsupple, durable, and richly finished to honor the designerโs intent.
Laferโs genius lies in the way structure and comfort coexist. The sculptural Brazilian hardwood frame cradles the body, while the sling-style leather cushions create a seating experience that is exceptionally comfortableโsupportive yet relaxed, with just the right amount of give. It is the kind of sofa you sink into, one that invites long conversations, afternoon reading, and slow evenings at home.
The warm tone and dramatic grain of the solid Brazilian hardwood contrast beautifully with the crisp black leather, creating a look that is both refined and distinctly modernโequally at home in a minimalist interior or a richly layered Mid-Century space.
About Percival Lafer:
Percival Lafer is a Brazilian design icon. Considered one of the best-kept secrets in Mid Century Modern, he is now being discovered by a new generation who have fallen in love with his exuberant use of exotic wood and plush leather.ย
Immediately after graduating from the Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Laferโs father passed away suddenly and he and his brothers were tasked with taking over LAFER, the furniture business. Percival focussed on the design and production while his brothers took care of running the business and finances. He used his architectural training to focus on the intricate mechanisms, revealing the nuts and bolts. He used injected foam in his upholstery before it became the standard. He created low-profile hardwood structures with plush leather upholstery. โIโve always been drawn to the motion features of furniture,โ heโs said. โThe engineering and design work that goes into its mechanisms is fascinating and fulfilling.โ His designs reflect a love for his native Brazil. He used high quality leather overstuffed and draped over Pau Ferro or Rosewood chair frames.
