    • An exceptional Model 309 sideboard designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik, Denmark, circa 1960s. Beautifully proportioned and extraordinarily well constructed, this is a superb example of Danish Modern cabinetry and the attention to detail that distinguishes the work of Hvidt & Mølgaard-Nielsen.

The sideboard is crafted in beautiful old-growth teak, displaying rich, warm color and expressive natural grain throughout. One of its most striking details is the construction of the case itself: exposed finger joints run along the corners, creating a subtle decorative rhythm while openly celebrating the craftsmanship and joinery used to build the piece.

The front combines a bank of five drawers with a pair of beautifully ribbed sliding tambour doors. The tambour doors disappear neatly into the cabinet when opened, revealing a spacious interior with an adjustable shelf. The doors have been carefully serviced and lubricated and now operate smoothly and effortlessly.

The five sculpted drawer pulls are beautifully integrated into the drawer fronts rather than applied as separate hardware, maintaining the clean, organic character of the design. The upper drawer is felt lined and divided for flatware or smaller objects, while the lower portion incorporates extra-deep double-height storage, giving the cabinet considerably more practical capacity than its restrained exterior suggests.

The case rests on an elegant solid teak base with slender cylindrical legs and distinctive angled stretchers. These architectural details give the substantial cabinet a remarkably light appearance, almost allowing the case to float above the floor.

This example has been professionally and comprehensively restored, bringing the old-growth teak back to its rich original character while respecting the integrity of the vintage construction. The tambour mechanisms, drawers, joinery and surfaces have all been carefully addressed. It presents beautifully and is ready for another generation of use.

More than simply a storage cabinet, the Model 309 demonstrates what makes the best Danish furniture of this period so desirable: exceptional materials, sophisticated joinery, sculptural details and highly functional design. From the finger-jointed case and ribbed tambour doors to the sculpted pulls and beautifully engineered base, there is something worth appreciating from virtually every angle.

A true heirloom-quality piece of Danish Modern design by two of Denmark’s most important mid-century designers.
