    • In Process means you can customize the sofa to your taste. Pick out a Fabric that would work for your interior.

This exceptionally rare Vladimir Kagan Tangent Sofa embodies everything that made Kagan (1927–2016) a pioneer of American modernism: fluid lines, sculptural silhouettes, and an unwavering belief that furniture should spark connection. Kagan was the first designer to curve a sofa, an innovation born from his desire to encourage conversation—people naturally turn toward one another when the furniture gently guides them to do so. The Tangent series is one of the purest expressions of that philosophy.

This example features the original Preview label and retains its iconic biomorphic form: a soft, continuous sweep of upholstery resting on Kagan’s signature tapered cone legs. The wraparound shape cradles the sitter while opening up a room with elegant movement. Seen from any angle, the sofa feels like a living sculpture—inviting, organic, unmistakably Kagan.

The current upholstery is a textured woven fabric with a playful, abstract motif that complements the sofa’s curves. As with all Kagan pieces at Hobbs Modern, new custom fabric is available and can be selected by the client. Whether you envision a rich mohair, a subtle boucle, or a bold contemporary textile, the Tangent Sofa adapts beautifully and becomes a bespoke centerpiece tailored to your space.

Rare on the market and deeply collectible, this is a masterwork of mid-century design—an iconic silhouette by one of the most important American designers of the 20th century.
