Part-Time Furniture Refinisher / Jack of All Trades
Hobbs Modern is one of the country’s premier Mid-Century Modern furniture restoration studios, specializing in museum-quality restoration of iconic vintage furniture. We work on exceptional Danish, American, Brazilian, and Italian modern design, restoring rare and valuable pieces to the highest possible standard.
We are currently looking for a part-time Furniture Refinisher / Jack of All Trades to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who is highly skilled with sanding, wood repair, and furniture problem-solving—someone who can assess a piece, understand what it needs, and confidently execute the work.
This position is typically 2–3 full days per week, with the opportunity for long-term growth.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your primary focus will be helping move furniture through our restoration queue by preparing pieces for final color, stain, and finish work. This includes precision sanding, veneer repair, structural problem-solving, and general restoration prep.
You’ll be working on:
- Fine sanding of teak, walnut, rosewood, and other veneers
- Veneer repair and patching
- Filling holes, chips, and surface damage in wood
- Diagnosing restoration issues and creating a clear plan of attack
- Repairing drawer function, drawer fitment, and case alignment
- Fixing structural issues in vintage furniture
- Prepping pieces for stain, toner, and finish application
- Working through difficult restoration challenges cleanly and efficiently
- Repairing tambour doors (a major plus)
Because this is also a jack-of-all-trades role, there will be times when you’ll help with general shop operations, including:
- Moving furniture safely within the shop
- Loading and unloading incoming and outgoing inventory
- At times assisting with local furniture deliveries to client homes
- Helping manage workflow and keep pieces moving efficiently through restoration
This is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable both in detailed restoration work and in the day-to-day operations of a busy high-end furniture business.
What We’re Looking For
Ideal candidates should have experience with:
- Fine furniture sanding, especially veneer work
- Veneer repair and restoration
- Wood repair and structural troubleshooting
- Diagnosing furniture issues and solving them independently
- Prep work for finishing and color application
- Clean, detail-oriented craftsmanship
- Working efficiently while maintaining high standards
Experience sanding surfboards, cabinetry, fine woodworking, or high-end finish prep can also translate very well to this role.
You should be someone who can look at a piece of furniture and immediately understand what needs to happen—whether it’s damaged veneer, sticking drawers, structural looseness, or finish prep.
You should also be comfortable lifting and handling furniture responsibly and representing the company professionally when delivering to clients.
Tools & Shop Environment
We provide:
- Professional-grade tools and equipment
- Festool sanders and sanding systems
- A well-equipped restoration shop
- A team environment focused on craftsmanship and quality
Why Work With Us
At Hobbs Modern, you’ll work on important vintage design pieces that require real craftsmanship—not production shortcuts. Every project is different, and every restoration matters.
This is a great opportunity for someone who takes pride in detail work and wants to be part of one of the best Mid-Century Modern restoration teams in the country.
We offer:
- Part-time stable schedule (2–3 full days per week) with potential for growth
- Competitive pay based on experience
- Opportunity for growth
- Paid holidays depending on role structure
- Work alongside a highly skilled restoration team and Mid-Century Modern specialists
If you’re highly skilled with sanding, wood repair, restoration prep, and you’re the kind of person who can jump in wherever needed—we’d love to hear from you.
