Arne Vodder Model 29 Teak Credenza for Sibast, Denmark
Designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbler, this exceptional Model 29 credenza is a beautiful example of the sophistication, craftsmanship, and subtle ingenuity that made Danish Modern furniture internationally celebrated during the mid-20th century.
Executed in richly figured teak, the credenza has a long, architectural profile elevated on beautifully tapered solid teak legs. The restrained casework allows the natural character of the wood to take center stage, with warm amber and reddish-brown tones and expressive grain extending across the top, sides, and doors.
The most distinctive feature is Vodder’s use of reversible sliding doors. One side is finished in teak for a quiet, monochromatic appearance, while the reverse presents a dramatic black lacquer. The doors can be individually reversed, allowing the credenza to be displayed entirely in teak, entirely in black, or with a combination of the two. It is a wonderfully clever detail: a simple functional mechanism that allows the character of the entire piece to change.
At the right is a bank of drawers featuring beautifully sculpted solid teak drawer fronts. Rather than relying on applied hardware, Vodder shaped the fronts themselves into elongated recessed pulls. The resulting repeating pattern gives the drawers an almost sculptural quality, creating shadow and movement across an otherwise disciplined rectilinear cabinet.
Behind the sliding doors is generous cabinet storage with provisions for adjustable shelving, making the Model 29 as functional today as it was when originally produced.
