An impressive Tolomeo Mega Floor Lamp by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, the dramatically scaled floor-standing version of one of the most celebrated Italian lighting designs of the late 20th century.
The Tolomeo is defined by its brilliant combination of engineering and minimalism. This oversized Mega version takes the familiar articulated form to an architectural scale, with exceptionally long adjustable aluminum arms that allow the lamp to extend dramatically into a room. Its articulated joints and exposed cable-tension system allow the arm to be raised, lowered, extended, and repositioned with remarkable ease while maintaining the beautifully balanced appearance for which the Tolomeo is known.
The adjustable aluminum shade can also be independently positioned, allowing light to be directed precisely over a sofa, lounge chair, dining table, desk, or reading area. A small metal handle beneath the shade makes repositioning easy while adding another characteristic industrial detail to the design.
Constructed primarily in polished and satin-finished aluminum, the lamp has an intentionally mechanical quality. Rather than concealing its workings, De Lucchi and Fassina made the pivots, tension cables, hardware, and articulated arms central elements of the design. The substantial circular aluminum base anchors the extraordinarily long arm while keeping the overall composition visually light.
The sheer scale is what makes the Tolomeo Mega particularly striking. Fully extended, the lamp reaches far beyond its base, allowing it to illuminate a seating or dining area from the side without requiring a ceiling fixture. Its combination of height, reach, and adjustability gives it the presence of an architectural installation while retaining the versatility of a floor lamp.
Designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, the Tolomeo family has become an icon of contemporary Italian design and an enduring example of how sophisticated engineering can become part of an object’s visual identity.
This authentic example retains Artemide branding on the articulated hardware and presents beautifully, with age-appropriate signs of use consistent with a vintage example.
