Teak “Round Chairs” by Hans J. Wegner for Johannes Hansen – Denmark, 1950s

*In the process of being restored*

An extraordinary and historically important Round Chairs (Model JH501) by legendary Danish designer Hans J. Wegner, crafted by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in the 1950s. Regarded as one of the most iconic pieces in the history of modern design, the Round Chair is a triumph of form, function, and craftsmanship.

Often referred to as “The Chair”, this design rose to international fame after it was featured in the first televised U.S. presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960. Praised for its sculptural elegance and perfect proportions, it became a symbol of Danish modernism and helped establish Denmark’s reputation as a leader in 20th-century design.

This matched pair features finely crafted solid teak frames with stunning grain, seamless joinery, and the subtle curves that make Wegner’s work so celebrated. The sculpted backrest, with its continuous arm-to-back flow, provides both comfort and elegance—true to Wegner’s belief that a chair should be beautiful from every angle.
