An exceptional example of Finnish modernism, this Alvar Aalto Model X601 “Fan Leg” Side Table was designed in 1954 for Artek, Finland. Constructed in birch, the table showcases one of Aalto’s most inventive developments in bentwood furniture: the sculptural fan leg, in which multiple slender sections of laminated birch spread gracefully outward as they meet the tabletop.
Aalto spent decades exploring ways to bend wood into structural forms, replacing the hard angles and exposed metal common to early modernist furniture with something warmer and more organic. The X601 represents a particularly beautiful evolution of that experimentation. At each corner, the laminated birch leg divides into a fan-like arrangement beneath the top, creating a transition that is both structural and decorative. Viewed closely, the layered construction becomes an architectural detail in its own right.
This vintage example dates to approximately the 1970s and was produced by Artek, the Finnish furniture company founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto together with Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The light birch construction gives the table the warmth and visual simplicity characteristic of Aalto’s work, while the subtly shaped square top and rounded fan-leg corners soften its otherwise geometric silhouette.
What makes the X601 especially compelling is the balance between simplicity and craftsmanship. From across the room, it appears almost effortless: a restrained square table supported by four slender legs.
