    • Iconic George Mulhauser "Mr. Chair" Recliner for Plycraft – Fully Restored in new Maharam fabric.

A true icon of Mid-Century Modern design, this Mr. Chair by George Mulhauser for Plycraft embodies sculptural elegance, ergonomic innovation, and timeless comfort. Designed in the 1960s, the Mr. Chair is celebrated for its organic form and engineering ingenuity, crafted from a single, flowing sheet of bent plywood that dramatically sweeps into a pointed back—a signature of Mulhauser's work.

This particular example has been fully restored to showroom condition. The rich walnut plywood shell has been professionally refinished, and the reclining mechanism has been upgraded with a brand-new tilt control, allowing the chair to recline smoothly in a slow, controlled motion. With a simple turn of the tension knob beneath the seat, you can customize the reclining resistance to suit your body, making it exceptionally comfortable for lounging, reading, or simply relaxing.

The seat and backrest are reupholstered in Maharam’s Beck fabric in the soft and durable “Molecule” colorway, a premium wool blend that offers both luxurious texture and enduring quality. The diamond tufting pays homage to the original design, enhancing the chair's visual depth and plush feel. This fabric choice, along with the ergonomic contours of the seat, ensures comfort over extended periods—this chair doesn't just look incredible, it feels incredible.

George Mulhauser, a pioneering designer of the mid-20th century, is best known for merging sculptural forms with mass-producible materials. A student of the Pratt Institute and a collaborator with George Nelson, Mulhauser brought innovation to American furniture design. His Mr. Chair remains one of the most recognizable and collectable lounge chairs from the era, prized for its dynamic curves, reclining capability, and unique combination of form and function.

      Dimensions:

      Chair: 35.5 W X 37.5 H  X 26.5 D

      Seat Height: 14 H

      Ottoman: 21.5 W x 24.5 L x 14 H
